Corneal Ring Implantation
Corneal rings are one of the most reliable treatment methods developed for keratoconus patients. In this treatment, small transparent semi-circular rings are placed inside the cornea. These rings are inserted through a tunnel created with a Femtosecond laser, completing the procedure very quickly and without any complications during the process. These rings are not visible from the outside and, most importantly, they are not felt in the eye like contact lenses, making it very comfortable for the patient. The rings, which can only be removed by a doctor, do not leave any permanent marks that would affect vision as they are not placed in the visual center.
These rings come in different thicknesses and are selected according to the degree of keratoconus. The aim of corneal ring implantation is to return the central part of the cornea to its normal anatomical position. The corneal ring implantation procedure consists of two stages. First, a tunnel is created with the Femtosecond laser, which takes about 15 seconds. Then, the rings are placed through the created tunnel. The entire operation is completed in about 5 minutes.
Pre-Operative Considerations
The initial examination by your eye doctor is very important for deciding on the surgery. In this examination, various measurements are made for corneal thickness, corneal structure, eye prescriptions, and eye pressure. If you use contact lenses, you should remove them a few days before the examination to obtain more reliable measurement results. You should avoid using aspirin-like blood thinners within 3 days before coming in for treatment. If you have other medications (for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.), you can continue using them as prescribed without interruption.
Post-Operative Period of Corneal Ring Implantation
In the postoperative period, there are no restrictions on your daily activities, but you will need to use eye drops for a few weeks.
Within the first 48 hours after surgery, you may experience pain or discomfort depending on your body's response. You may have blurry vision, watery eyes, or light sensitivity temporarily after the surgery. These vision complaints are normal during the healing process and will decrease day by day. It is very important to attend follow-up appointments as requested by your doctor after the surgery.
